NOGA trained player starts in World Cup

Brent Sancho, who was trained and developed as a young player by NOGA Director Gary Book, anchored the center of the Trinidad and Tobago defense during their miraculous 0-0 tie with Sweden in front of 65,000 fans in Dortmund, Germany.

Brent said "No one expected us to get a result against Sweden but we always believed in ourselves, who knows what can happen now"

"Brent is a great example to all young players who dream of making soccer their life" said Gary Book. "He has continually worked at his game and often played in positions and circumstances that were not his first choice to achieve his goal. I could not have been more proud for Brent and his family to see him step out onto the worlds biggest stage and accomplish the things we had taught him under the most extreme of soccer pressure. I just hope he does not perform so well if he is selected to play against England"

Karen Dolan . . . Superstar

The growth and development of youth soccer is the story of the hard work and dedication of outstanding volunteers. NOGA salutes one such superb individual -- Karen Dolan. Karen has been the heart and soul of NOGA's program at Our Lady of Snows for many years. Watching each of her own children, as well as hundreds of others, grow and develop through the program.

Karen has now helped to establish a new camp for the children of the community. St. Gregory's will host the camp which will be at Upper Alley Pond Park during the week of July 31 - August 4, from 9 am - 12 noon. We welcome our new camp coordinator Liz Harrington who will carry on in Karen's great tradition.

A Peace of NOGA History

The success of those staff who have been associated with NOGA is little short of amazing. Their spirit of adventure combined with outstanding talent and sparkling wit seems to be a very rare elixir that has taken so many to great heights.

There are so many NOGA staff legends who have honed their coaching and life skills at NOGA and then moved on to use their skills in the wider spectrum of the World’s Greatest game. One such NOGA alumnus is Gary Stidder who spent a dozen summers coaching and entertaining a whole generation of NOGA players in the mid 1980’s. Gary is well remembered by a large number of soccer moms and dads, who now in turn send their own off spring to NOGA each summer to work with the new generation of coaches.

After leaving NOGA, Gary took up a full time role as a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton. In 2001, Gary was instrumental in creating the ‘Football 4 Peace Project’ which provides an opportunity, through soccer for children from Arab and Jewish communities to meet and participate together in teams and groups. “Football 4 Peace” allows them to learn to play and work together so that distrust might be overcome and bridges built for understanding and appreciation of each other in peace.

The program has grown considerably over the past five years. Gary continues to play a vital leadership role in developing the project with the British Council and the English Football Association. The 2005 project involved 1000 children from 20 communities and 40 UK volunteer coaches and was subject of a documentary film called ‘Children of Jordan Valley’ which has been released in Europe as part of the World Cup Finals in Germany.

The program addresses issues such as conflict resolution, coexistence and peace through the medium of soccer. The intense six-day program consists of skills development and technique training, competitions, and small-sided conditioned games and culminates in an exciting tournament in which the children play in mixed teams and compete for medals and trophies provided by the project. The 2006 project begins in July and will involve more children than ever before.

Here is a clip of Children of the Jordan Valley that features NOGA’s own inimitable Gary Stidder.

Liverpool comes to Hofstra

Those players attending the camp at Hofstra during the week of August 21-25 may like to learn how to speak the Liverpudlian dialect of "scouse" before they check in

Joining our American players that week will be over 50 young players from the famous Cardinal Heenan sports school in Liverpool, England.

"It is going to be a great experience for all concerned" says NOGA Executive Director Neil Graham. "The young Liverpool players will not only create a highly talented environment within which to learn and train but will also add to the atmosphere of the program with their renown Liverpool wit and sense of fun. It will be a week of cultural exchange and great soccer and one to remember for all players that attend."

Cardinal Heenan is famed for producing top soccer players and counts amongst its alumnus Steven Gerrard of Liverpool and England who was voted the number two player in the world this year.

"Cardinal Heenan coach Brendan Beech said" The American summer camp is a phenomenon that all English boys know of, yet which very few have the opportunity to experience.  Our trip to NOGA's superb program will give our players not only the chance to witness first hand the value and joy of the camp, but also to forge lifelong friendships with athletes from across the Atlantic.  Each of the players is extremely excited about the trip and very much looking forward to meeting their coach and fellow campers"

So, if you want to test yourself out against some of England's brightest schoolboy prospects and learn a little "scouse" in the deal there are still a few open spots for that week.

NOGA Pride State Their Case For Europe

Eleven of the players traveling with NOGA to Sweden this summer to take part in the Gothia Cup showed their class this past weekend in winning their respective Connecticut State Cup finals. Nine of the players play on the CFC U14 Arsenal team and two play on the older CFC U15 team. The NOGA Pride team looks in great shape with the U14 year team winning on penalties against their sister team CFC Comets a team that contained no less than six of the players that won the Gothia Cup last year.

A number of the players that experience international competition with NOGA play within the CFC program. CFC is ranked 3 in the region only behind national powerhouses PDA (New Jersey) and Bethesda (Maryland). NOGA provides staff for four of the CFC teams and train many of the younger travel teams that supply the CFC program.

CFC coaching director Sean Driscoll commented, “Its amazing the number of players who are ready to move onto the next level after coming through the NOGA program. NOGA spends countless numbers of hours developing their staff and their curriculum is second to none. All of this leads to top class coaching throughout the year, including great summer camps. Our players that travel to Europe every summer have a once in a life time experience.”

This year, NOGA has three girls teams taking part in the tournament, two U15 teams and a U14 team. Hopes are high that they will repeat last years championship winning performance. Each team will depart for a short preseason in London on July 12th we will keep everyone up to date with their progress as they represent NOGA and the USA at the worlds biggest soccer tournament.

If you would like to take your team on a soccer trip of a lifetime with NOGA please call the NOGA office for a complete planning guide.
